Stepper Gear Motor
Stepper motors, also called step or stepping motors, are valued for their accurate positioning and high torque at low speeds. However, it’s crucial to match their size to the load and application to prevent issues like stepping errors or motor stalling. Adding a gearbox to the system enhances motor performance. It reduces the load-to-motor inertia ratio, boosts load torque, and minimizes motor oscillations.
When classifying stepper gear motors by their gearboxes, planetary gearbox stepper motors are the most common. You can find examples of 1.5-12V geared stepper motors in various applications.
TSL MOTOR designs stepper gear motors with flexibility, allowing customization to suit any equipment need. They offer a range of standard models, including versions with gearboxes and encoders.

The Technology Of Stepper Gear Motor
A stepper motor with a gearbox turns electrical pulses into controlled rotation. It’s ideal for tasks that need high precision and repeatability, such as robotic arms, CNC machines, 3D printers, and automated systems.
The motor has two main parts: the rotor, which spins with each pulse, and the stator, which holds the coils that generate a magnetic field. A gearbox connects to the motor to reduce speed and boost torque.
There are two common gearbox types: planetary and spur. Planetary gearboxes use several gears arranged around a central gear. Spur gearboxes usually have two gears—one large and one small. Planetary designs increase torque and reduce speed. Spur types mainly slow down the output speed.
Gearboxes also help cut down motor noise. This makes them a better fit for quieter environments.

Common Gear Motor Designs
Regardless of the chosen gearmotor technology, several standard form factors and design considerations are widely used across different industries. Here are a few examples that can help define your ideal solution.
Exposed Frame

Approximately one-third of our designs feature an exposed structure, mainly when the gearbox frame is square or rectangular in shape.
Sealed Frame

Some gearbox designs are round, which allows for easier coverage of the gears. The primary advantage of this design is that it helps keep debris out.
Fold-Back

If space is limited in length, consider using a fold-back gearbox. Alternatively, a non-concentric offset gearbox shaft could be an option.
Shaft Customizations

Certain applications require specialized shafts. Options such as extended or shortened shafts, d-cuts, keyway cuts, location holes, and threaded shafts can all be accommodated.
Clutches and Braking Mechanisms

Clutches allow the gearbox to be separated from the application, while mechanical brakes can secure the gearbox shaft in a stationary “park” position.
Advanced Motion Control Systems

While precise movement is often required, motion controllers can also play a crucial role in prolonging the lifespan of gear motors by optimizing their operation.
