Spur Gear Motor
TSL Motors provides compact and reliable spur gear motors designed for cost-efficient performance. Our motors meet a wide range of application needs with various reduction ratios, voltages, sizes, and precision gear options, including steel or brass gears.
Our spur gear motors come in different designs, such as open-frame, closed-frame, offset, and foldback. They range from 10mm to 42mm in diameter and support voltages from 1V to 24V DC. The load torque ranges from 0.1g cm to 200kg cm, with output speeds between 0.5rpm and 5000rpm. A popular choice is our N20 micro gear motor, known for its efficiency in low torque applications.
We offer options for straight-cut or helical-cut gears, with or without encoders, and the choice between carbon or metal brushes. We also provide custom motor services tailored to your specific needs.

The Technology Of Spur Gear Motor
Straight or spur gears are cylindrical gears with teeth aligned parallel to the axis of rotation. The teeth extend outward, providing efficient power transmission.
These gears do not create axial thrust under tooth loads, making them ideal for moderate speeds. They offer reliable and efficient power transfer. However, at high speeds, spur gears can generate more noise compared to other gear types.

Spur Gear Motors: Structure

Spur gear motors differ from planetary gear motors in that their output shaft is typically eccentric. However, depending on installation needs, manufacturers can modify the shaft to be centered through internal machining.
Spur gear motors have a simple structure, making them more cost-effective than planetary gear motors. The gearhead reduces output speed and increases torque. We use high-quality steel or brass gears for strength and durability. These motors can work with iron core, coreless, and brushless motors.
A spur gear motor is a cylindrical gear motor with several spur gears aligned along parallel axes. The teeth of the gears are parallel to the installation axis, preventing axial thrust. The gears’ profile follows an involute curve, with only one pair of teeth engaging at a time, creating radial forces on the shaft. As a result, all loads are transferred through the single contact point between the gears. Spur gears tend to generate more noise compared to planetary gears due to the higher forces on the teeth. They do not experience sliding losses, making them more efficient in power transmission. Adding extra gear stages can increase the reduction ratio, reducing output speed and increasing torque.
Common Gear Motor Designs
Regardless of the chosen gearmotor technology, several standard form factors and design considerations are widely used across different industries. Here are a few examples that can help define your ideal solution.
Exposed Frame

Approximately one-third of our designs feature an exposed structure, mainly when the gearbox frame is square or rectangular in shape.
Sealed Frame

Some gearbox designs are round, which allows for easier coverage of the gears. The primary advantage of this design is that it helps keep debris out.
Fold-Back

If space is limited in length, consider using a fold-back gearbox. Alternatively, a non-concentric offset gearbox shaft could be an option.
Shaft Customizations

Certain applications require specialized shafts. Options such as extended or shortened shafts, d-cuts, keyway cuts, location holes, and threaded shafts can all be accommodated.
Clutches and Braking Mechanisms

Clutches allow the gearbox to be separated from the application, while mechanical brakes can secure the gearbox shaft in a stationary “park” position.
Advanced Motion Control Systems

While precise movement is often required, motion controllers can also play a crucial role in prolonging the lifespan of gear motors by optimizing their operation.

FAQ About Spur Gear Motors
What is a Spur Gear Motor?
A spur gear motor combines a spur gearbox and a motor, typically using a 3-24V voltage. The output shaft is usually eccentric. These motors are precision cylindrical gear motors that transfer motion between two parallel shafts with straight, parallel teeth.
What is the Spur Gear Speed Ratio?
The spur gear speed ratio can be calculated in two ways:
Using the output speed and rated motor speed (input speed):
Spur gear ratio = Output speed / Input speed.Using the number of teeth on the driving gear and the driven gear:
Spur gear ratio = Number of teeth on driving gear / Number of teeth on driven gear.
What Maintenance is Needed for Electric Gear Motors?
Electric gear motors, or spur gear motors, are low-maintenance. Regular checks for lubrication, wear, and alignment are suggested to maintain peak performance and extend lifespan.
